Important Legal Information About Non-Ferrous Scrap Metal Recycling

Details on the Scrap Metal Recycling Law House Bill 1552 & House Bill 1815

    • Each time you bring a load of non-ferrous scrap metal to EHMR for recycling, you must have current government issued photo ID. This includes a driver’s license, identification card or passport.
    • Anyone selling non-ferrous scrap metal must be at least 18 years of age
    • For each transaction we will record your current street address and phone number and obtain your signature swearing that the metals you are selling are not stolen.
    • We will be grading all of your metals for purchase or none at all. After it has been weighed we are not able to give partial loads back so that you can be paid in cash.
    • If the total amount of your transaction for non-ferrous metal is more than $30, we pay the first $30 in cash and issue a check for the remaining amount.
      “No matter how little over $30”.
    • All Non-ferrous payments are in checks. We will give you the check same day.
    • You want to cash it, it’s best to take to our bank & they will cash it for free.

    • Be sure to bring a valid state-issued driver’s license or ID card each time you bring in scrap metals. Your license must be current and valid
    • We do not accept punched or damaged IDs
    • If your ID is not valid, we cannot buy your metals. To check to see if your ID is valid, click here
    • If the total value of the metals you bring in is less than $30.00 you will be paid in cash or check.
    • We are not able to purchase wire that has been burnt unless you have proof of a “ legal burn”.
    • We are not able to buy kegs except from breweries or keg manufacturers.
    • We do not buy Vehicle, Trailers or Titled Items.
    • We do not except Refrigerators or Air Conditioners.
    • We don’t except TV’s or items containing Mercury.
    • Aluminum cans are exempt from the $30 rule.

    Wrecking Vehicle for Scrap

    • No same day payment can be made to the seller of private vehicle metal property.
    • Payment must be held for three business days. After three business days, check can only by, mailed to a street address on your ID.

    Catalytic Converter Recycling

    • You MUST provide documentation that the Catalytic Converter in your possession is the result of replacing the catalytic converter from a vehicle registered in your name.
    • The documentation is not specific – could be vehicle title, registration, or receipt from an autobody shop, or an auto parts store. We are not required to validate this information just collect it.
    • Catalytic Converter payments are in checks. We will give you the check same day but the check is not valid for 3 business days. After three business days the check can cash or deposited. 
    • You want to cash it, it’s best to take to our bank & they will cash it for free.

Exceptions for Business Customers

  • If your business handles Non-Ferrous or Catalytic converter scrap metals and brings them in for recycling, we are able to pay you cash after the appropriate information is on file.

  • We have a form for business customers which must be filled out by the business owner. The form requires general company information and must be accompanied by a copy of your business license, either presented in person or faxed to us. We also must keep a record of all employees that are authorized to deliver scrap metals on the company’s behalf, as well as their vehicle description and vehicle license plate number.

  • After this paperwork is on file, we are able to pay cash to any employee on file for the company. The person selling the metal must bring a valid government issued picture ID and sign our form saying that the metals are not stolen.
